The Big Five personality model, also called the Five Factor Model (FFM) or OCEAN model, is the most extensively validated personality framework in academic psychology. Unlike the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, which assigns people to one of 16 discrete types, the Big Five measures five continuous dimensions — allowing for a more nuanced and scientifically reliable picture of personality. This test is based on the International Personality Item Pool (IPIP), a public domain repository of scientifically validated personality items.
MBTI categorises people into binary types — you are either Introverted or Extraverted, Thinking or Feeling. The Big Five measures these same dimensions on a spectrum, which is how personality actually works. Research consistently shows that MBTI has poor test-retest reliability — the same person frequently gets a different type weeks later. The Big Five shows substantially higher stability and predictive validity for real-world outcomes including job performance, relationship quality, and wellbeing.
