What is Ashtakoota Milan?
Ashta = 8, Koota = category, Milan = matching. Traditional Vedic marriage compatibility is assessed across 8 dimensions of life — from your deep biological nature to your temperament, prosperity, health, and spiritual orientation. Each category is worth a different number of points, totalling 36. The system has been used for over a thousand years not as a rigid pass/fail test, but as a precise map of where a couple will thrive and where they will need conscious effort. A score of 18+ is traditionally considered acceptable. 27+ is considered very good.
What you need: Date of birth, time of birth, and birth city for both people. The tool calculates the Moon nakshatra from your birth details using the correct timezone for each city. If you already know the nakshatra, use the "Know Nakshatra" tab instead.

About the Ashtakoota Milan Calculator

Ashtakoota Milan is the classical Vedic method of assessing compatibility for marriage. It evaluates 8 kootas — categories of compatibility — based entirely on the Moon nakshatra of each person. The system does not require birth time, only the birth nakshatra (Moon's position at birth), making it one of the most widely used and accessible tools in Jyotish. This calculator computes all 8 kootas from first principles, displays a full radar chart, and provides the total score out of 36. The ₹249 full report explains each koota individually, detects Nadi and Bhakoot dosha, and provides the traditional remedial measures where applicable.

The 8 Kootas Explained

Varna (1 pt) measures spiritual temperament compatibility. Vashya (2 pts) measures mutual attraction and influence. Tara (3 pts) measures the auspiciousness of the birth stars in relation to each other. Yoni (4 pts) measures physical and intimate compatibility based on the animal symbol of each nakshatra. Graha Maitri (5 pts) measures the friendship between the ruling planets of each person's Moon nakshatra. Gana (6 pts) measures temperament compatibility — Deva (divine), Manushya (human), or Rakshasa (demonic). Bhakoot (7 pts) measures emotional and financial compatibility and is one of the two most important kootas. Nadi (8 pts) is the highest-weighted koota and relates to health, constitution, and progeny compatibility.

How to Find Your Nakshatra

Your nakshatra is determined by the position of the Moon at the time of your birth. To use this calculator, you need both persons' Moon nakshatras. If you don't know yours, use the Vedic Birth Chart tool to calculate it from your date, time, and place of birth. The nakshatra is listed in the free result.

Kundli Match — Guna Milan

Kundli matching — Guna Milan — is the Vedic system of assessing compatibility between two individuals for marriage and long-term partnership. It analyses the birth charts of both individuals across eight parameters (Ashta Koota) to produce a composite compatibility score and qualitative compatibility profile.

The Eight Kootas

Varna · Vashya · Tara · Yoni · Graha Maitri · Gana · Bhakoot · Nadi. Each koota assesses a different dimension of compatibility — from spiritual alignment and temperament to intimate compatibility and health. Maximum score: 36 points.

Score Interpretation

Below 18: not recommended · 18–24: acceptable · 25–32: good · 33–36: excellent. However, the qualitative assessment of specific parameters (particularly Nadi and Bhakoot) is as important as the total — some low-total matches are workable; some high-total matches have critical doshas.

Mangal Dosha

Mars in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house creates Mangal Dosha. When both partners have it, it cancels out. The assessment evaluates this and other doshas alongside the Guna Milan score.

Beyond the Score

Strong Guna Milan does not guarantee a happy marriage; low Guna Milan does not make partnership impossible. The charts reveal tendencies and areas requiring conscious attention — one input among several in a considered decision.
